Remember our report last year about London’s Victoria and Albert Museum exhibition, devoted entirely to the work of Yohji Yamamoto?

Yohji Yamamoto at the V&A

Of course, the master himself couldn’t help but be a part of it. Thanks to the extensive material available on YouTube, we have found a long interview conducted during the exhibition. As with his clothing, the philosophy and professional history of the illustrious Japanese designer transcend the inexorable passage of time, providing, even after a year, useful insights to help understand his work and artistic personality.

Yet another opportunity to discover Yamamoto’s work is that of watching the documentary This is my Dream, screened at the Design Film Festival in Singapore last November, as part of the touring film festival (the festival  then went on to Berlin, Taipei, Bangkok, etc.) dedicated exclusively to architecture, fashion, photography, street art  motion graphics, technology and design subcultures.

Here is a short trailer of the movie

…waiting for spring-summer collection, why don’t we find out the different lines by Yohji Yamamoto?

More than a clothing brand, Cosmic Wonder is a philosophy of life and a conceptual project conceived by the Japanese artist Yukinori Maeda in 1997.

At the very center,  serving as the common thread, as can be intuited by the name, there is total attention aimed at the processes that govern the terrestrial ecosystem, starting from the most basic aspects, such as light.

From artistic installations to publications and musical editions, to the building of a structure, in 2007, where the diverse applications, according to eco-sustainable criteria, were integrated to host visitors for exhibitions and concerts, with Light Source, COSMIC WONDER also becomes a high quality clothing line.

The fabrics, always with low environmental impact, are the products of an entire productive process certified as organic and eco-sustainable. The items are dyed by hand with herbs, plants and algae: madder, pomegranate, gardenia, mulberry leaves, just to name a few. The same can be said for the printing process, which always uses plant based colors.

But, contrary to what usually happens in lines designed around environmental concepts, Cosmic Wonder also places the utmost attention on the design of each single piece. Cuts, seams and the composition of the prints reflect the cultural background of the Japanese school, rich with asymmetrical shapes and unusual forms.

In the conception of an environmental lifestyle, the artist Yukinori Maeda creates an original synchronicity among the ecological directives and Zen philosophy, where harmony and beauty of the cosmos coexist and supply energy to the resources and balance of the single individual, starting with the sharing of those elementary particles that make up the light, the heat, but also dreams and ideas.

More of the creative tumult that inspires the world of Flemish designer, Nico Uytterhaegen! From perfumes to jewellery, the artist is versatile and inimitable when it comes to producing leather accessories.

The craftsmanship and modernity of his products are immediately apparent. High-quality, hand-crafted Italian leather is moulded into a complex and abstract system of lines, seams, zips, folds and gathers to create bags in new shapes, which are as aesthetically appealing as they are useful.

As a serious designer, Uytterhaegen gives utmost importance to the functionality of his products and makes this the starting point of the creative process. Handles are designed not to be grabbed but to be completely slipped over the hand; bags may be carried on the arm or slung around the neck according to need.

Models that appear undersized when flat, unexpectedly expand into soft, comfortable three dimensional bags when filled to the surprise of onlookers.

Bags, cylinders and circles, experiments for daily life, compatible with forward-looking fashions, geared towards recognizing and emphasizing aesthetic values, even in the most practical aspects of our hurried existence.

Detail sweater Oyuna

The strength of globalization is at work here!

From clothing to home accessories, the British designer brand Oyuna, has had the genial idea of combining the finest cashmere from its native country of Mongolia, with its most established manufacturing tradition from Scotland.

If Mongolia is among the top producers in the world and without equal for quality, the chemical properties of the water in British streams have enhanced the luxurious softness of this noblest of yarns for centuries.

The rareness of the material limits distribution of the product to a small circle of select boutiques around the world and makes it difficult to find and, paradoxically, to learn of its reputation. A strange by-product of marketing products of superior quality nowadays is that they are often not granted the attention that they deserve. And so it is that this obscure label’s elegant sweaters remain, for the most part, unknown.

Despite all of this, it would be quite wrong to expect to find the reassuringly traditional styles that are so usual in cashmere sweaters. Oyuna knitwear blends the basic simplicity of its lines with additional key themes,

using overlapping

and double weaves

and asymmetric panels, revealing a design sensitivity that is decidedly modern and open to the influences of the most daring fashion designers in the industry.

Gauze, flannel, and jerseys, are perhaps the most remarkable transformations of this noble raw material, which are decisive in determining its final shape.

Silhouettes and cuts make each piece completely functional and part of the sophisticated collections, which are at times complex though certainly never obvious, that make up the all-new Ivo Milan store collection.

This is a collection to be touched and admired but especially, one that should needs to be worn to appreciate its proportions and unpredictable characteristics.
