BaoBao Issey Miyake F/W 2012-2013!

Pieces of applied science (AT CASA September 2011 ).

There is certainly no risk in making this statement when talking about BaoBao origami bags, the intellectual works created by Issey Miyake and his excellent team of computer experts, mathematicians and material scientists.

Behind the apparent simplicity of a small triangular module replicated over and over again lies the genius of a designer who has made the analysis of materials and their potential development the cornerstone of his artistic and professional career. All of the well-known Japanese Maison brands feature a mix of science and art that the Baobao line expresses with extraordinary simplicity.

Using basic two-dimensional geometry, such as the square and the rectangle, accessories that are not designed to be spherical only reveal their three-dimensionality when filled. This quality, in addition to the lightness of the PVC used, makes BaoBao bags, clutch bag and cosmetic bags exceptionally practical for travelling, since they can fold back on themselves and become extremely compact. The handles, which are often detachable, have also been designed as an “everyday” type locking mechanism for the accessories.

Miyake’s enthusiasm and exuberant creativity reverberate in the bright, metallic glossy and matte colored futuristic textured surfaces that, for certain models in the Autumn/Winter 2012-2013 collection are enriched with poetic and joyful appliqués of flowers and tropical butterflies, designed by the young Japanese illustrator, Kiyoshi Kuroda.

This is another hint of Issey Miyake’s collaborative efforts, but also a perspective that seeks to combine the mathematical rigor of science with the lightness of aesthetics.
