A Proustian figure of speech cleansed of all nostalgia and rendered physical in the shape of clothing. The balance created by Gregis essentially has that touch of a different daily reality that has yet to unfold, while seamlessly blending the beauty of the past with current cultural resources.

Comfortable volumes and colour tones drawn from the most evocative seasonal contrasts emphasise a serene sense of femininity, enveloped in fibres and fabrics that have been worked by hand, using the instruments, loom, needles, and crochet hook representing far slower societies. Straw bags, generous shawls and heavy sweaters are evidence of the insurmountable practicalities of facing up to the imminent cold weather.

At the same time, a complexity of layered and asymmetrical shapes, with broad and concise lines that combine so well together, and a certain freedom that is provided especially by the garments making a variety of options accessible; these are all evidence of a marked sensitivity to the more evolved clothing options of the Japanese and the countries north of Alps.

The minimalist design of the exclusively hand-made line of hats made for the German brand SCHA, belies the expert craftsmanship of the Polish designer Ewa Kulasek. Having studied painting and sculpture at the School of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf, the artist continues to explore the figurative arts from her studio in Cologne, choosing the aerial form of head covering as the form for her sculptural skills.

Within just a few short years, Europe’s most important exhibition centers have conferred indisputable artistic value to her works, establishing her as an internationally renowned milliner.

Despite the ephemeral nature of the accessory, to Ewa Kulasek the hat should emanate from the thoughts and respect the identity and character of the wearer, and this can only happen by giving it poetic dignity that takes away the depersonalizing contingency of seasonal trends.

Following a complex and personal synthesis of extremely uniform cultural references, with SCHA the designer draws upon a systematic removal of decorative and geometric elements, modeling pieces away from the rigorously formal, rounded style, increasingly to the circular shape of the head. This is functional not only because it adapts to different clothing styles, but also because of the many different possibilities of expression offered by each article.

Fibers and quality fabrics in natural colors, interweave with extremely simple forms, which are nevertheless capable of generating undefined associations, and references distant in both time and space. Hat-sculptures: objects to be worn with a casual cheekiness or to contemplate their timeless beauty.

A series of blue chairs, where the colourful hats by Akio Hirata, the most important Japanese hat designer, are hung and displayed.

The position of the hats hides an artificial optical effect, that is obtained through a clever combination of three-dimensional elements, the chair backs, and two-dimensional elements, the legs of the playful blue chairs.

When you look at the shop-window from a certain point of view, the apparent plainness of the installation is able to deceive the ingenuous observers. Only from a different point of view, the complicated and surprising optical illusion is revealed.

Another evidence of the essential value that is added by different skills is clear when a shop-window is not merely considered as a transient display of items to be sold, but also as a special place where abstract compositions can be shown and shared with a moving audience.
