After 24 years spent in our historic space in Santa Lucia street, the story of IVO MILAN starts again in Altinate street 149, along the continuation of the same ancient roman street, Annia Popilia, overlooking the magnificent Romanesque Santa Sofia church and alongside the Pesaro Palace (Pizzo today), residence of a young Mozart in 1770, during his visit of Padua. Not only, very close to the baroque San Gaetano church and its very famous museum complex that stands nearby.

Every day the shop completes itself with new details, becoming more and more comfortable and showing slowly its innate beauty thanks to the warm wood of the ground floor ceiling, to the visible irregular stone wall of the hallway, to the second room floor in Creta’ stone and to the medieval volts of the basement.

Returning operative again in the lively atmosphere of residents, filled with young students facing their difficult exams of the faculties of engineering, statistics, physics and mathematics, the technical pole of the University of Padua. While shopping or drinking coffee you are immersed in the typical university routine, where every operator, from the bartender to the baker is part of that world, calling boys and girls by name, knowing the teacher’s fame, participating in the outcome of the exam: passed or failed? Complicit and busy faces, often festive, despite the inevitable exam’s anxiety.

A new life, animated by a passing by of people deeply connected to the historic Altinate hamlet.

With the welcome of the neighborhood, with some little insights of the new shops, we come back with our Mix and Match, worn by Ginevra and Sari. The photographic set still to be set up, the tirelessly rhythm of the fittings still to be done, alongside with the depth of the last few months, led us to show a little bit of ourselves at the debut of the Summer season, still under the effects of the titanic move we’ve just faced.

Ginevra is wearing the hip-lenght jacket, slim, in stretch silk and elastan georgette in shaded gold by RUNDHOLZ DIP, the long and lean tank top in light and blue tones printed jersey by RUNDHOLZ,  the short and wide trousers in hemp, cotton and metal pinstripe by MARC LE BIHAN and the ‘friar-like’ sandal in leather, wood and expanded eva by RAWCLAYS. This is the first solo exhibition in its home town for Nicola Bortoletto, a young artist from Padua, class 1997.  An episode of dialogue between distant and, at the same time, close expressive experiences: on one hand the artistic manipulation of materials recovered from mainly construction contexts, such as tarred rubber and bitumen, on the other the particular sensitivity of IVO MILAN in identifying poetic languages within the so-called fashion system.

We encounter two different ways of shifting the focus from their instrumental or commercial origins to more visionary and aesthetic matrices, together, in the same space of the shop situated in via Santa Lucia 73, until next 10 June. A felt selection of artwork were one can observe how mater, in the abstract form chosen by the artist, also lends itself to existentialist analyzes and metaphors.

Part of the exhibition is a film made of moments, sequences of the artist’s creative process, and a graphic work, portrayed as a photographic book, which investigates the research and the creative process in his workplace.

The fulcrum of Bortoletto’s experience is the elaboration of the elements as the foundation of the artistic work, as well as the naturalness of the used materials. In an age strongly characterized by the physical dematerialization of the work of art, the sculptor has in fact elaborated a language able to tell the strong relationship between the transience of time, the human being and the matter.

His sculptures appear as assemblages and actions of repositioning, works of art in which the material entity becomes a preponderant element, together with the desire to magnify the poor material of everyday use, without any figurative purpose. They appear as primitive and primordial works, which invite to be discovered by the spectator, an exclusive and personal interpreter of every stratification, furrow and scratch revealed by the material.

Find the Spring/Summer Collection 2019

It has finally started the exhibition that the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the most important American institution in cultural context of fashion and costume, has dedicated to the work of the designer Rei Kawakubo, with Comme des Garçons.

For the second time in its history, MET reserves its space for a living creator (previously in 1983 with Yves Saint Laurent) and Art of the In-Between, inaugurated last 4 of May, has already been called ‘epochal’ for the deepness of the methodological analysis adopted.

“I have always pursued a way of thinking about design by denying established values, conventions, and everything that is generally accepted as a norm. I express myself through the concepts of fusion, imbalance, incompleteness, elimination, and the absence of an intent” has declared the designer (quote from Style Magazine n° 5 of May 2017)

An atypical operating method, mostly after placing it in the conforming and homologous context of the fashion system, governed, for its own survival, by the tendencies that, in order to be assimilated, must be made with easily comprehensible stylistic codes.

On the opposite, the Japanese designer has always created collections that needed to be metabolized and processed over long periods of time, encouraging personal and, most of all, not univocal interpretations. Immediate approval, for Rei Kawakubo, is just a reflection and confirmation of a failed job, as it is too simple.

And again, in another famous statement:

“I create clothes for women who are not influenced by the opinion of their husbands”
emerges a significant distance from a way of understanding fashion as a practice to valorize two cardinal elements: the anatomy of the body and, no less important, the social status.

Rei Kawakubo dismantled, literally, these two goals. With her, the dress becomes, more than ever, an appendage of the thought and personality of the wearer, a possible element of a hypothetical philosophical dialogue between the self and the rest of the world. So it is no longer the way of showing curves and economic resources, but a powerful means of communication, expression and misguidance, an aesthetic exercise in all aspects, an extension of its own culture, creativity and reflexive complexity. The dress withdraws its seasonal recognition, acquiring an absolute timelessness. For the history of the costume, this is a revolution. Bold volumes, systematic asymmetries, stratifications, unfinished fraying, cuts and gashes in the most unexpected points, only some of the Comme des Garçons language traits.

The exhibition, curated by Andrew Bolton, staged 150 dresses organized in several thematic sections:

basically, the same antinomies posed by Rei Kawakubo in the series of different collections.

In the middle of the Paris Fashion Week for the next Autumn/Winter, it should be reported an other very important acknowledgement to the designer who most was able to connect clothing to concepts as innovation, experimentation and research. On Saturday 5^th March, at Issey Miyake boutique of Rue Royale in Paris, it will be launched an unpublished monograph dedicated by the Taschen publishing house to the Japanese master and to his prolific and hyper-technologic  Design Miyake Studio, established in the 1970.

A book that, not by chance, is launched almost simultaneously with the exhibition that will be opened on the 16^th of March at the National Art Center of Tokyo, completely installed to celebrate the professional history and the cultural contributions introduced by the researches carried out during these years by the researchers team involved in Issey Miyake’s ambitious creative project.

A long, extensive tale of the different steps that have characterised of the well-known polyester pleating, today present in the most prestigious shops in the world with the bran new version called “Baked Stretch”.

The chromatic and formal possibilities opened by this innovative material manufacturing, so called ‘baked’ as the pleats take their aspects after a heath exposition process very similar to the one of the bread rising, reveal the maturity and the extreme autonomy gained by the excellent collaborators chosen by Issey Miyake, among them it’s not possible to not mention the Maison creative director, the young Yoshiyuki Miyamae.

Future Beauty: Avant-Garde Japanese Fashion

Organised together with the Kyoto Costume Institute and the Barbican Art Gallery of London, the show focuses on how the different conception of beauty expressed by the so-called Japanese school has turned traditional Western fashion styles on their heads and forced people to re-examine the relationship between design, art, fashion and culture.

Whereas most designers’ work centres around the cult of the female body, Japanese avant-garde on the other hand is engaged with transforming it radically, according to Katherine Bowers of WWD (Women’s Wear Daily). And this transfiguration is on display at the Peabody Essex Museum in a selection of pieces exemplifying the different conceptual approach set in motion largely by four major heralds of what could be considered an aesthetic revolution: Rei Kawakubo-Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake and Junya Watanabe.

This is a wonderful opportunity to explore the complex work of these designers, whose expert knowledge and unquestionable creative genius has the ability to accentuate and respect the female intellect in a way that slick fashion has rarely, if ever, been capable of doing.

This obvious borrowing from Apple’s famous 1997 ad campaign Think Different is meant to introduce an event which, for the first time in Italy, will bringing together the works of two Finnish designers who, not only share the same nationality, but also the not so common ability to place poetic abstractions into objects for ordinary use.

Accustomed to seeing ordinary handbags and scarves increasingly making use of the symbolic value of recognizable, ubiquitous and easily replicable fetishes, Jaana Parkkila experiments on leather surfaces

and those of Kristiina Karinen with yarns

will help you to rediscover the ornamental nature of accessories, and above all to appreciate their unquestionable artistic value.

Both artists have been recognised internationally by several contemporary art and design galleries, and the first Italian exhibition of their work will be on display at the IVO MILAN store until Friday, 22 November 2013.

KRISTIINA KARINEN

Merino wool, silk and cashmere are the Italian yarns that make up her uniquely crafted knitwear pieces, whose innovative manufacturing techniques overcome the limitations of standard knit designs. Individual modules are replicated using mathematical calculations proportionate to the final shape of the garment and sewn together piece by piece, creating a careful balance between micro and macro, striking three-dimensional effects and complex surfaces around the modernity of the original prototype.

JAANA PARKKILA

The designer’s creations involve selecting the finest Italian leathers and environmental-friendly materials for her accessories – mainly bags – which are characterized by geometric forms that vary from pure minimalist to the replication of modules in the ‘origami’ style. The use of laser cuts gives freedom of expression to the creative act, and makes for dynamic volumes and designs with an extreme elasticity in the different sizes of the individual pieces.
